History

The Philippine Tattoo Artists Guild, Inc. (PHILTAG) is the first duly registered non-profit tattoo artists organization in the Philippines under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC No. AN09S-01860). Established on May 18, 1995 by founding members Fernito Nievo, Myke Sambajon, Norman Cabao and Frank Ibanez, PHILTAG initially had less than 50 members.

With its first set of officers namely Fernito Nievo, Myke Sambajon, Edgar Antonio, Rodrigo Belen, and Alfred Guevarra, PHILTAG established its goals and objectives:

  1. To establish tattooing in the Philippines and thus be recognized as a legitimate art form and trade through its advocacy of decency, safety, and hygienic practices.
  2. To unite and educate Filipino tattoo artist for the common cause of safe and responsible tattooing in terms of disease prevention.
  3. To provide income-earning opportunities for Filipino artist to become self-productive and competitive both in the local and international market
  4. To help the Philippine tattoo industry flourish and be recognized as a legitimate contributing entity to the development of the Philippine economy

PHILTAG has since mounted tattoo conventions and an Artist National Congress. it has continually sought to improve the industry’s public image through its strict screening of potential membership applicants and its collaboration with government agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Trade and industry (DTI), Local Government Units (LGUS) and health/cultural Non-Government Organizations (NGOS) that provide seminars on sanitation and hygiene for PHILTAG members.

In 2002, PHILTAG, in cooperation with the Remedios Aids Foundation (RAF), DOH-PHIL National Aids Council (PNAC), and DOH-Environmental and Occupational Health Office, published the tattoo guidebook titled “Tatu: A guidebook for tattoo artists and body piercers.” This reference material is the first of its kind in the country for the practitioners of the art. It was conceptualized to guide tattoo artists especially in the aspect of disease prevention.

In March 2005, after mounting multiple and small-scale tattoo conventions in the country, then PHILTAG President Alfred Guevarra, through the support of future PHILTAG President Ricky Sta. Ana, conceptualized and held the first ever “Dutdutan Philippine Tattoo Convention” in Garahe Bar, Mabini, Ermita, Manila. From then on, Dutdutan continued to flourish and is now established as the Philippines’, if not the lA’s biggest and grandest tattoo convention.

Present PHILTAG officers are Ricky C. Sta. Ana, Alfred Guevara, Bernard Mongas, Philip Pena, Martin Caoile, Junbal Tabuyoc, Julio “Bong“ Acosta, and Butch San Diego. PHILTAG has 200 active and non-active  members, mostly from Metro Manila and Luzon. PHILTAG continues to grow as the country‘s only legitimate tattoo artists organization in terms of education, social welfare, self-productivity and health concerns.
